"Fan's Notes"
Sometimes a restaurant shines best when responding to screw ups. Such
was the case yesterday at Hogan's. My burger special arrived well south
of medium rare line. (politely) asked my server if she thought it was
medium rare. As she was taking the place from my hand she said "nope." A
handful of minutes later she returned with a perfectly cooked and
delicious burger. The atmosphere is relaxed and warm without being
forced and staged; what's more the servers' dispositions suggest they
like where they work. For mid-level pub grub without pretension this a
great place to eat then hang for additional rounds of drinks. The crowd
skews young so it tends to be as loud as you'd expect. Good beer
selection, but I remain baffled by the club sandwich that omits bacon
yet includes...sprouts?!?
Hogans Hideaway on Park Avenue in Rochester is a cute little restaurant with a simple menu. But the truth is the food is terrific, the service is friendly and quick and the value is outstanding. We used Hogans for a large family dinner (24 people) and management worked with us on a special menu, the service was prompt and terrific and, incredibly, 24 very different people walked away praising the place. That's astounding, but Hogans simply delivers.
Consider this as a nice spot for a simple dinner (salads, sandwiches are great) or more. Meat eaters and vegetarians will be happy and the bill will delight you.
I take friends here from out of town, and it always is a pleasant experience. Be sure to try their creamy honey salad dressing. It is delicious and unique. I enjoy their quiches and their salads. I have also tried the pork chop special and it was delicious. They have a great wine selection, too. the atmosphere and decor is pleasant, welcoming, yet eclectic. Sometimes they have live music.

Hogan's is one of those classic neighborhood places in an
interesting brick building with an ever-changing chalkboard menu. The
food is interesting and consistent, year after year. There are
relatively few restaurants that have been open for so many years and
continue to feel current.
